Choosing the Domain Name for your online store is one of the most important things you will do.
There are really 2 options:
- Choose your brand name as the domain name.
- Choose a keyword-based domain name.
Option 1 is pretty obvious; if your brand name is available, GET IT! You should still secure that domain name even if you don’t plan to use it. Don’t let others get your brand name domain name or it can cost you dearly.
Option 2 is more SEO oriented. You can choose something like BrightRedCoolers.com if your products is only Bright Red Coolers. Choosing a keyword-based domain name requires good research. We encourage you to use Google Keyword Tool to learn more about how much traffic each keyword may send to your site. Remember to check the box for “exact match” so you get more accurate numbers.
Remember to keep it as short as possible, easy to remember, and easy to read.
Consider Geo-targeting your domain name for better local exposure. Adding the name of your city or state into the domain name can give you better rankings when people include the city or state on their search query on search engines such as Google.
